We’ve all heard the Spanish phrase ‘mi casa es su casa’ which in English means ‘welcome’ or ‘make yourself at home’. That is exactly what Rebecca Reynolds and her boyfriend did when they found Shared Ownership at Casa Court in North West London.
25-year-old Rebecca Reynolds and her partner managed to battle the elements, escaping the rental trap and became homeowners using the shared ownership scheme at Casa Court in Colindale, NW9.
Our new home would grow with us
Rebecca, a nurse at Great Ormond Street explains: “My boyfriend and I met at university; after we graduated we did what most people do and carried on renting our small studio flat in Golders Green. With both of us working in the King’s Cross area, it was all about convenience for us and paying as little as possible in rent every month. Our friends had managed to purchase a home using the Shared Ownership scheme and were really keen for us to look, so we began to think about our options. We put away some money each month into a Government-backed Help to Buy ISA in order to boost our savings for a deposit, and soon after we started to look at what properties we could buy.”
Rebecca continues: “We wanted to know that our new home would grow with us, so that’s when we looked into Shared Ownership and realised that by using this scheme we could actually afford to buy a two bedroom property. We did some research and registered on a few Shared Ownership websites, then we found out about Genesis’ new development of apartments at Casa Court in Colindale.
We viewed the show home and instantly felt the apartments ticked all the boxes for us. We knew we definitely wanted to buy a new home so we could make it our own. The development is in a really central location; it’s great for work as Colindale underground station is a short walk from home and gets me into Kings Cross in 30 minutes. We were able to buy a 50% share in a two-bedroom ground floor apartment for £230,000. It fitted in perfectly with our budget, making sure that both our monthly outgoings and long-term costs remained affordable. We pay a low-cost rent on the remaining 50%, and in fact our total monthly outgoings now work out less than what some of our friends are paying to rent a room in a shared house!”
Rebecca continues: “We both couldn’t be happier, from renting a small studio flat to having a spacious two bedroom home with our own outdoor space has been just fantastic. We love the area, there is a really nice community feel here and it only took us a few days for it to really feel like home. We can’t wait to make the most of our patio and enjoy the summer evenings. We would definitely recommend Shared Ownership to our friends and family, it provides a much-needed stepping stone for many people wanting to get on the property ladder without wasting money on rent. For us it has meant that we have been able to achieve our dream of home ownership long before we thought it would even be possible.”
